 Code of Ethics


The Métis Credentialing and Authorization Board (MCAB) is committed to fostering ethical practices among professionals certified in genealogy, data analysis, archival work, and related fields. This Code of Ethics establishes the principles and standards that guide MCAB-certified professionals in their work, ensuring respect for Métis and Indigenous communities, accuracy in research, and integrity in professional conduct.

Principles

  1. Integrity and Honesty
    • MCAB-certified professionals shall conduct their work with honesty, transparency, and accountability.
    • They shall accurately represent their qualifications, certifications, and expertise, avoiding misrepresentation or exaggeration.
    • They shall disclose any conflicts of interest that may compromise the impartiality of their work.

  1. Cultural Respect and Sensitivity
    • Professionals shall demonstrate respect for Métis and Indigenous cultures, histories, and traditions in all aspects of their work.
    • They shall engage with communities in a manner that honors self-determination, cultural protocols, and traditional knowledge.
    • They shall avoid actions or statements that perpetuate stereotypes, harm, or misrepresentation of Métis or Indigenous identities.

  1. Accuracy and Rigor
    • Professionals shall ensure that their research, analyses, and conclusions are based on verifiable evidence and adhere to rigorous methodological standards.
    • They shall maintain accurate, well-documented records and correct errors promptly when identified.
    • They shall refrain from fabricating, falsifying, or misrepresenting data or findings.

  1. Confidentiality and Privacy
    • Professionals shall protect the confidentiality of personal, familial, and community information obtained during their work, adhering to applicable privacy laws and ethical standards.
    • They shall obtain informed consent when collecting, using, or sharing sensitive data, particularly related to genealogy, DNA, or blood quantum.
    • They shall safeguard records and data against unauthorized access or disclosure.

  1. Professional Responsibility
    • Professionals shall uphold the reputation and standards of the MCAB by maintaining competence through ongoing education and professional development.
    • They shall provide services within the scope of their certification and refer clients to qualified professionals when necessary.
    • They shall treat colleagues, clients, and community members with fairness, respect, and professionalism.

  1. Community Engagement and Benefit
    • Professionals shall strive to ensure their work benefits Métis and Indigenous communities, supporting their rights to access and control their genealogical and cultural data.
    • They shall engage in collaborative and transparent communication with communities, prioritizing their needs and perspectives.
    • They shall advocate for ethical practices in genealogy, data analysis, and archival work that empower communities.

  1. Compliance with Laws and Standards
    • Professionals shall comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines governing their work, including those related to Indigenous rights, data protection, and intellectual property.
    • They shall adhere to the standards and policies set forth by the MCAB, including any updates or amendments to this Code of Ethics.

Enforcement

  • Violations of this Code of Ethics may result in disciplinary action by the MCAB, including warnings, suspension, or revocation of certification.
  • Professionals are encouraged to report unethical conduct to the MCAB Ethics Committee for review and resolution.
  • The MCAB will handle all complaints confidentially, fairly, and in accordance with established procedures.

By accepting MCAB certification, professionals agree to abide by this Code of Ethics and to uphold its principles in all professional activities. This commitment ensures trust, respect, and excellence in serving Métis and Indigenous communities.
